Expertise
Aileen Agopian, founder and principal of AGOPIAN inc., has spent over 25 years operating at the highest level of the fine art market as a key figure in the Contemporary Art world. Aileen is an executive member of the Association of Professional Art Advisors.
Before establishing her art advisory in 2016, Aileen had an acclaimed auction career at Sotheby's as the International Senior Vice-President & Specialist of Contemporary Art based in New York and she was also the co-head of their Contemporary Sales in Doha, Qatar. At Sotheby's she was integral in the acquisition of Andy Warhol's Liz #3, 1963 for $32million in November 2014, which became the catalyst in the donation of 42 contemporary works of art with a combined value of $500million by the Edlis Neeson collection to the Art Institute of Chicago; the Institute's largest historical gift. Prior to this role, for 10 years she was the North American Director of Contemporary Art Auctions at Phillips Auction House in New York. At both auction houses, she worked closely with private clients, their advisors as well as foundations on negotiating high-value, top caliber consignments, winning the business through aggressive and unique financial proposals often involving financing through guarantee packages, as well as art lending components. She furthermore worked with high priority clients worldwide, strategically courting them to bid and acquire top works for their collections
As an accomplished auctioneer, Aileen conducted auctions for Sotheby's & Phillips, and continues to conduct charity auctions worldwide for various organizations and also participates in numerous panel discussions and lectures related to the global art market, most recently as a guest lecturer at the Graduate Center, CUNY.
Aileen is an art advisory board member for the Coalition for the Homeless since 2010 as well as a board member of The Feminist Institute, the first significant online archive for the study of Feminist documentation since 2016. She was formerly on the board of the Children's Museum of the Arts NY for 6 years, seeing its new building come to fruition.
Aileen began her career as the sales director at White Cube Gallery based in London and worked with artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. She graduated from Tufts University Cum Laude with a BA in Art History and French Literature and completed her Master's Degree with Honors in Post-War & Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Institute London.
